Florida’s 10-20-Life Law

The 10-20-Life law is a mandatory minimum sentencing law in the state of Florida that was enacted in 1999. It requires a minimum sentence of 10 years for certain crimes involving the use of a firearm, 20 years for the discharge of a firearm, and a 25-year to life sentence if someone is shot and injured or killed.

The law applies to a variety of violent crimes, including murder, aggravated assault, and armed robbery. It also applies to certain drug trafficking offenses involving firearms.

The purpose of the 10-20-Life law is to impose harsher sentences on offenders who use guns in the commission of crimes, in order to deter them and others from using firearms to commit crimes. It has been controversial, with some critics arguing that mandatory minimum sentences can be overly harsh and do not allow for judicial discretion in sentencing. However, supporters of the law argue that it has been effective in reducing gun-related crime in Florida.

We work tirelessly to build the best defense possible. Each case is unique because, regardless of the charge, the facts are going to be different. However, some things remain the same, regardless of the severity of the charges. In each and every case, we review all documentation provided by the state. These materials are collectively referred to as “discovery.”

These documents include all police reports generated in your case, a list of witnesses, a check list of physical evidence, and any statements that were provided to law enforcement. Once our violent crime attorneys have a full understanding of the details of the case, we work with you to determine a course of action. Sometimes we go to trial, and sometimes we work toward a deal with the prosecution. Regardless of the manner in which your case resolves, you will know that you are receiving the benefit of a prepared and thorough defense.
