Attorney Scott Skier Featured in The Palm Beach Post – Teen charged as adult in West Palm shooting

The 17-year-old is accused of shooting a 69-year-old man outside the Sandpiper Village apartments off 36th Street.

WEST PALM BEACH — A 17-year-old has been charged as an adult in a shooting last month outside a West Palm Beach apartment complex.

Shawn Allen Sams, 17, was booked Wednesday into the Palm Beach County Jail on an aggravated battery charge. He is being held in jail without the possibility of posting bond.

Sams is accused of shooting a 69-year-old man in the leg at about 11 a.m. Dec. 13 at the Sandpiper Village apartment complex on the 3900 block of 36th Court, off 36th Street near Australian Avenue in the city’s north end.

His attorney, Scott Skier, questioned the evidence in the case against Sams, saying that it “leaves far more questions than concrete facts.”

A witness told West Palm Beach police that the 69-year-old had been arguing with a teenager, who records indicate is Sams’ sister. The witness reportedly heard the teen tell the man that she would call her brother, who would shoot him.

When Sams arrived shortly afterward, he reportedly punched the man. The man’s wife tried to intervene and was shoved to the ground, a witness said.

Sams then reportedly fired four rounds, which were detected by the city’s ShotSpotter system. At least one of those rounds hit the back of the man’s right leg.

The man, his wife and a witness identified Sams as the gunman, according to police records. It appears that Sams was arrested that evening.

“I have a healthy skepticism regarding the credibility of both the victim and the witness in this case,” Skier said. “Mr. Sams looks forward to the discovery process.”
