Lowest Crime Rate in Florida in the Past 45 Years

If you live in or have visited Florida, you’ve probably felt like it was a pretty safe place to be. That’s not just the sunny skies and the fresh air talking—there is documented proof that Florida is safe. The Sunshine State has reason to celebrate since Governor Rick Scott recently announced that Florida’s crime rate is at an all-time low. The state started keeping data about crime in 1971 and since then has seen a steady decrease in crime. The data was collected in order to indicate strengths and weaknesses in law enforcement so that adjustments could be made for public safety. The collection of data has proven to be very beneficial.  In fact, in 2015 alone there were over 10,000 fewer crimes committed than the previous year. Keeping an eye on crime trends helps law enforcement and other officials to stay tuned in to what the public really needs as far as safety.

Why the Decrease?

Many other states may be interested to learn exactly what caused this steady decline and overall improvement in public safety. Governor Scott indicates that it is the dedication of invested law enforcement officers that has made the biggest impact. However, the governor is also committed to the process as he invested $4.9 million into the Florida First Budget to improve Florida Department of Corrections and increase staff in public safety positions. Having more people on the ground that are committed to keeping Florida a safe place to live, work, and raise a family will make the difference in maintaining this drop in crime. Giving people access to professionals who can make a difference will lead the impact in crime rates.

Violent Crime Increased

However, one thing to be aware of is that while crime rate across the board is lower, violent crime is trending upward since 2015. The type of crimes that have contributed to the decrease include robbery, burglary and larceny. However, the crimes that contribute to the spike in violent crime include rape and murder. Just last year there were 1,040 murders and 7,537 rapes.

Future Expectations

While there is certainly more work to be done, Florida is off to a great start. The financial support coupled with dedicated law enforcement will mean a safer place for the future. Based on recent data, Florida is well on its way to being one of the safest places to live.
